What is a social enterprise?

Social Enterprises are businesses that trade to intentionally tackle social problems, improve communities, provide people access to employment, training and help the environment. Essentially, the business is driven by a specific cause - particularly disability in this case - and will dedicate a percentage of its profits to work toward its social mission.

Why is this so important in the NDIS?

Even though the NDIS provides funding for participants and access to amazing service providers, many businesses enter this market with the sole purpose of making money and may have little to no experience in supporting people with a disability. This detracts from what the NDIS was created for and more importantly what the community needs, which are businesses that act with integrity, compassion, empathy and professionalism.

Social Enterprises still need to make a profit to survive - they’re not charities. But this also keeps them accountable and striving to improve their services. One way you can make sure you’re being supported by the right provider is to understand their business, why they started, their mission, values and culture.

People with a disability deserve to be supported by value-driven, compassionate companies and Social Enterprises are one step in the right direction.
